Although, Mexico claimed California, the HBC ignored them & sent fur brigades reg. from Ft. Vancouver all the way to San Francisco, using what was called the Siskiyou Trail.
The initial thrusts were headed by  Alexander McLeod  who led exploration and trapping parties south beginning in 1826. Other Scots as well as Peter Skene Ogden and Michel Laframboise. ranged freely. :rt th
