Title: Where are the Rebs and Yanks?
Post by: greyhunter on September 14, 2012, 08:30:00 PM
Just cruising thru the index and found this thread hasn't had a very recent post.    If yer out there show yer self! I enjoy our Texas history reporters' posts, maybe someone else can do the same here. I will take a picture of a reunion cane my  ancestor  received, a veteran of Culps Hill, and post it here in the next few days. As a caretaker of our little local cemetary, I also take note of the Civil War vets interred there, and make sure they get their markers taken care of.

I have toagree with you . Seems like someone pulled a plug and the interest went out . Over the years we as a family paid visits to many of the battlefields from Maine to Florida . Must have walked a 1000 miles in old cemetarys locating graves long neglected and putting them on the roster . The last grave we turned in was a black soldier who his former cicilian emplyer as an aid. There was a drive on to get these listings  , but thats been at least 10 years ago now .
One of my grandsons got involved when he was 16 and stayed with it for several years , Hes in his 30s now and has been taking history in colledge (*part time) .  I guess the decline in activity is like other fields of interest  . The economy has put a hurtin on much of recreational past times .
Hang in there  , it may turn-a-round when the dust settles from our political mess .

There used to be an annual civil war reenactment in my town. It stopped about 5 years ago. I dont know if interest is down all over or what. We go to gettyburg about 3 times a year and i havent seen the people camping out as much as i used to. Speaking of it, i have seen any encampments at valley forge either. I know muddy run rendezvous has also be fighting to stay coming around every year too.

It seems that if interest in the history of our nation is a ta low ebb . Lets hope that the efforts  we continue to pursue on this and several other sites is enough to keep things from falling by the way . I know it sounds and looks bad at  this point , but there are many younger  folks searching for what were trying to preseve .

I forgot there was even a board on this topic.  There again, while I have an interest in history, it really doesn't extend to the CW.

Maybe if it was retitled "The Union and Confederate Soldiers - The War of Northern Aggression "

capt. jas. That might stir up some more posts . I guess most who do the CW tend to stay in a fairly narrow time frame and post on sites dedicated only to that time . Thought the interest would increase because of being the sequi-centenial and all. but-----
