Title: One of my favorite quotes
Post by: mario on September 19, 2012, 01:35:31 AM
Don't remember if I've posted it before, but this is one of my favs. I wonder if one can still subsist in such a "vagrant way" in GA these days?  8)

"The Southern Colonies are over-run with a swarm of men from the western parts of Virginia and North Carolina, distinguished by the name of
Crackers. Many of these people are descended from convicts that were transported from Great Britain to Virginia, at different times, and inherit so much profligacy from their ancestors, that they are the most abandoned set of men on earth, few of them having the last sense of religion.

"When these people are routed in the other provinces they fly to Georgia, where the winters are mild, and the man who has a rifle, ammunition, and a blanket, can subsist in that vagrant way, which the Indians pursue; for the quantity of deer, wild turkies, and other game there, affords subsistence; and the country being almost covered with woods, they have it always in their power to construct temporary huts, and procure fuel..."

Speaking as one who is "displaced due to conscription" in the NWT...yes sir Mario, that is the southern life right there.

Mario , I believe I,ve discovered the reason so many are agrivated when they hear your opinion on wether or not a certain  would fit into a time frame or location. You should be elated and proud to know that you have achieved the attitude and project your disdain towards the average patriot reenactor . I have to tell you that one of the reasons is the in depth knowledge of your chosen personna . As you have stated , your family arrived here in 1912 and had to glean the information you learned through the "Librarian" route . You had no long family history of tales , legends and family myths to stimulate your interest in the political and/or social status of the history of the development of the country we live in ?
Many of the folks here can trace and verify their family lines back to the early 1600s . As I,ve said (many times) no doubt ) After nearly 50 years of searching dusty and moldy archival materials and records and spending many hours in public records and cemeterys throughout the north east area of the country . Have established and verified my ancestor who arrived on the shore of the bay a short distance from plymoth rock . The year was 1638 , the ship was the James .
This should be a great stimulas to doing research but it seems so many of us Linnen-skinners were satisfied to base our personas on the myths ,  legends and half truths passed down generation to generation . And that we should not need to verify anything to anybody . Sorry , it just don,t work that way . I have great respect for the hours and hours of reseach you have don and the level of knowledge achieved . The only point thus far that I do not agree with you on , is that there is a mental connection to the area where the generations of my famiky fought and some died to get the personal freedoms all of us enjoy. And I catch your British lovin butt on my turf , I,ll lift your scalp . :peace

The reason most get aggravated is the simple rule of "I don't want anyone telling me what to do." Which is amusing considering I don't tell anyone what to do. I tell them what I do/would do.

I don't have "disdain" towards anyone, but when someone says A and I say I prefer B, they sure throw the hate my way.

I have plenty of family tales, etc. Just not in the US. Some of my distant relations were planting settlements and fighting Indians in the New World long before Jamestown or Plymouth.

Hell, some of them were the Indians being fought (recent discovery)!

What you do is none of my concern. What I get concerned with is myths and legends being passed on as fact to others.

My Paternal ancestry only goes back to @ 1914,Poland and Russia seem's to have had some disagreement's as to where the borders actually were, and the church record's were destroyed,ALLof them!

On my Mothers side,I have an aunt who traced us back to 1400's Dutch heritage,Hendrik Hudson and William and Mary of Orange are supposedly my ancesters. Can't verify,my Aunt's notes and research were throw out by my cousin as "rambling's of a crazy woman!" II Timothy 4:14!

So,if you can get info on your past as Mario and others have,TREASURE IT! I'll never know mine.

As to your wondering if a person could plunk their self down in a remote ???? area of Ga. today? Its just my view , but I doubt  if you did ,  it wouldn,t  be long before the long arm of the local  policy makers found a way to discourage the practice ? In fact where I.m located is probably one of the last frontiers for such a venture . Wish I could give you a more positive answer , but after many years of attempts at breaking the umbilicle cord to the "grid" the attempts were good education in the more primitive ways . But ,no cigar.Came real close at times .

Oh, you would be surprised what you can find on the net. Three months ago my wife knew nothing of her family, now she has run it back past the little fracas of 76.

There are lots of records, county, state, etc. You might need some help along the way but you can do it.
