Title: Native American plant uses
Post by: Ironhand on August 29, 2013, 10:04:32 PM
Need some help from all the wise men, and ladies, at the fire. My 12 year old niece has a school project I am helping her with. I need information on native american uses for wildflowers, trees and other plants. Food, medicine, decoration or crafts. Any use will help. Since we are in Michigan she is  especially interested in the Great Lakes area but any information will help. Trying to get the kid started right.

Thanks
Ironhand

Cool site sneakon - I will have to try to check that out in the near future!

Here's one on uses in the "Northeast", which is pretty vague...

NativeTech: Indigenous Plants & Native Uses in the Northeast (http://www.nativetech.org/plantgath/plantgaht.htm)

Have her check out sumac - medicine, herb, tea, smoke, spiles (for gathering sap). Oh, and birchbark! Wild rice was a staple here in western Great Lakes region.....
