Title: Mustanger and Filibuster Killed
Post by: Craig Tx on March 21, 2014, 09:10:08 AM
From the Texas State Historical Association

Famed mustanger and filibuster killed

On this day in 1801, Philip Nolan, mustanger and filibuster, died at the hands of Mexican troops. It was not his first visit to Texas to acquire horses. He was also known to be carrying on illegal trade with the Indians. He left Natchez at the head of a body of well-armed men in October 1800 and made his way to the area north of Nacogdoches. He then proceeded to a now-unknown Central Texas site, where he erected a small fortification, including some corrals, and began capturing mustangs. He was killed at his fort on March 21, 1801, by troops from Nacogdoches sent out to intercept him. His men, captured and tried, spent years in prison for their part in Nolan's final expedition, the precise nature of which has not been satisfactorily explained.

Well Unca Russ you know as well as I do that the line between myth and history is often very blurry in Texas history.

After all, there is still debate of whether Sam Houston was actually acting on behalf of Andy "By Gawd" Jackson when Texas rose in rebellion.

Right Craig!
I suspect THAT question will also "always be around with no real satisfactory explanation" and, like ya said, there's that fine line between myth and history that will always remain blurry when it comes to Texas history.

Thanks for keeping this forum up'n running, I'm sure there's others that enjoy the reading as much as I do.

You just keep postin'...always a bad time of year right about this time, every year, what with income taxes coming on, spring clean-up, and all those honey-do's that never got done the last time the sun actually did shine a little bit.

Still yet, your personal participation on this forum can only be seen as OUTSTANDING as you truly know and understand the subject matter you present!

You don't get a lot of hits, other than a few snide remarks from fellow Texans like myself, who laugh with you rather that at what you write, and a few others who are truly interested in history, but overall, if I were to rate your forum against ANY of the other forums on this Board, it would definitely get an A+ right along with those getting all the hits.

And for that, I do thank you!

Like Russ said - don't be worried about folks not responding to your posts. I read every one of em, enjoy em, but just don't have much to say about em mostly. Believe me, if someone didn't like your posts - that's when you would hear about it!
