235 years ago today, 7 October 2015, the Battle of Kings Mountain was fought. One of the most pivotal battles of the Revolution. The Overmountain Men and militia from Wilkes and Surrey counties, led by Cols. William Campbell, Isaac Shelby, Charles McDowell, and John Sevier soundly defeated Loyalist Militia led by Maj. Patrick Ferguson. Prior to this battle, things were not going well in the South. Charleston had fallen, Gates was badly beaten at Camden, and loyalist feelings in the South were running high. After the battle, the loyalists in the Carolinas were no longer a strong military force. Cornwallis had lost his entire left flank and was forced to cancel his plans to invade North Carolina and he withdrew to South Carolina.
It was the beginning of the end of the Revolution.
Interestingly enough, Maj. Patrick Ferguson was the only participant at the battle that was not born in the colonies. He was born in Scotland, all of the other participants in the the colonies.
