Title: Indians Take Captives At Fort Parker
Post by: Craig Tx on May 19, 2017, 07:45:13 PM
From the Texas State Historical Association

On this day in 1836, a large force of Comanche warriors, accompanied by Kiowa and Kichai allies, attacked Fort Parker, located on the headwaters of the Navasota River in what is now Limestone County. During the raid the Comanches seized five captives, including Cynthia Ann Parker. The other four were eventually released, but Cynthia remained with the Indians for almost twenty-five years, forgot white ways, and became thoroughly Comanche. She was perhaps the most famous Indian captive in Texas history. Her son Quanah became a celebrated Comanche chief.

"She was perhaps the most famous Indian captive in Texas history. Her son Quanah became a celebrated Comanche chief ".

Absolutely!
I can remember hearing stories from my own grandparents about Cynthia Ann Parker, stories that had been told to them.

The one interesting thing about this woman, with the telling and re-telling of this story was, and has always been, about this woman's raw strength.
Physically and emotionally this lady stood as a giant among pioneer women.
Her story has been told in several languages, in both historical and cultural perspectives, while she continues to live in the hearts of many Texans.

(Ask any of my daughters who Cynthia Ann Parker was, and they will likely surprise you with their answers...they too have heard, and read quite a bit about this lady.)

You may enjoy the novel, "News of the World"  about a Kiowa captive and her return to her family in TX.  Well written; satisfying ending.
