Title: Athapaskan Hunters
Post by: Winter Hawk on February 10, 2020, 02:56:44 PM
I'm reading Athapaskan Adaptations, Hunters and Fishermen of the Subarctic Forests".  In the pictures section there was this:

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

The one has a rifle in a case over his shoulder, powder horn and bullet bag; the other a bow with side quiver, from 1840.  Both have leggings with garters below the knees, and a strap under the instep of their moccasins.

I don't recommend going after moose with a knife from a canoe, though!

Great photos! I think it is illegal in most states to hunt deer, etc. from a boat...otherwise using a knife from a canoe would be "great fun,"...at least until you actually caught up with one of the critters... :lol sign

Many years ago I took an anthropology course at the college in Ketchikan.  We saw a film one day of an Eskimo hunter going after a caribou.  The hunter was in a kayak, the 'bou was in a river, and the method to kill it was many jabs with a spear.  Not a pretty thing to watch, and I'm not sure how authentic it was.  It took a long time, and many spear jabs for the animal to die.  Death by a thousand cuts!
