Thanks Mark. I shot the bullseye first, and I knew a vertical group like that on the Sgt. York target wasn't going to work too well. Was going to wait till another day and shoot it with another rifle. But the smaller aiming point made me think like Mel Gibson. Aim small, miss small.

Well heck, pressure is on I guess
 Nice targets.
Still too hot to bow hunting might have to hit the sandpit

As a not yet shooter, I really shouldn't argue with the head honcho
BUT
As I always heard, the black part of the Sgt York target doesn't count.
Actually, if you hit the black part, it is minus 10.
And the white part is laid out like a 10 ring target with points decreasing as it goes out.

But, what the hell do I know?  I've only been shooting at that target for 50+ years.
I am not shooting, so don't pay any attention to me.
Just saying...
John
And on to another bit of possible good news, I heard on Sunday that our local range was going to re-open in November.  Hopefully then I will go from a kibitzer to a competitor.

John that's how I've always seen it too. The idea being to try and get that ball in the bottom of the V. w/o hitting the black.
It's still fun as is though.

Of course, guess who introduced that target to the CdA club?
I have cursed myself ever since that day.
I remember it clearly.  I was sitting in a bar with John Crumb after a club meeting discussing targets.  This was probably in October of 1977.  I drew a rough sketch of the silly thing on a napkin and John liked it and it has been with the club ever since then.  FWIW, we used to have our meetings at the WWP hall in downtown CdA.  Not many people still remember that.

Is that target one that you shot? Did everybody just shoot 2 shots at it? Give us the particulars on what you were using when you shot it.

Hi Tom,  The target was posted at 25 yards.  I shot it with the PA Hunter that Kees sold me.
.530 ball, .015 patch with spit lube, 65 grains of Ffg Goex, black English flint, Ffffg prime.
This was before I converted it to percussion.  And yes, everyone was supposed to shoot two shots at it.
Actually, the second shot went off just a bit before I intended it to, but the results were sure good.  I didn't argue with it.

Thanks John. I wouldn't have argued either. Very impressive. Leave it up to those old TC's.

Yes, leave it up to those old T/C's with a different barrel on it.  Well, the same barrel with a bigger bore.

Well John, I can't see that a couple larger holes in the target would hurt anything.

If I'm still here next year, and able to shoot the postals, I don't have a problem with shooting John's target. Won't be the first target with -10 possibilities and probably won't be the last. Mark, you're the NMD here. We are at your mercy.

Well Sgt or at the time corporal York wouldn't be too impressed by my shooting.
Should have wet my front sight first.

This was with my north star trade gun.
First shot right on the bullseye.
Boy was I full of myself.
What's that they say about celebrating too early.
Oh well at least there's October.

Kevin, You're supposed to print it in "Landscape" mode! The way you did is too small. Try it again in Landscape.

You really think that would help, I mean honestly  :luff:
I'll try again but I might just use the ol TC .
I shoot that so much better than my flinters.
Wonder if it's the set triggers.
Since ol York used a capper, I'll honor him.
you are all correct, definitely minute of deer.
Don't think I'll hunt with the trade gun though.

I?ve got to say, I?m impressed with the groups you pulled off with that trade gun?especially considering the recoil you?re dealing with and the lack of a rear sight to anchor on. Tackling a postal shoot with a smoothbore is no small thing, and I admire the boldness it takes to step up with one.

I thought about posting my own targets with the recently finished Kibler SMR, but I?ve decided to hold off and re-shoot them once I?ve had the chance to properly sight it in and experiment with loads. I?d rather give myself the best shot than settle for something half-dialed.

I picked up an extra drop-in barrel chambered in .45 cal so that I might be able to hunt with this guy this fall.

Ha! Thanks, Kev, but I thought the TMA only had about five shooters that actually participate in these postal shoots? 😏

Next time around I am definitely silver-soldering the underside of my front sight instead of staking it. As you know, I was blowing patches too, which explains why my shots kept drifting a couple inches left or right. Meanwhile, I kept chasing the problem by nudging the sight back and forth like it was the culprit.

Sgt York coming soon. But I don?t know if I can match Tom.

Dag nab it! Missed it by one! Got the Kibler out today and got it sighted in, followed by the postal shoot targets. I am a little baffled: I had to move the front sight noticeably to one side to achieve a true zero. I understand the sighting process, but I have never had to offset the sight this far from center on any other rifle. Wondering if it is just a weird machining quirk or something.
Title: Re: SEPTEMBER POSTAL TARGETS and August reslts
Post by: No Powder on September 15, 2025, 11:21:12 AM
Well Eric, I've heard that sometimes a bore is out of center from one end to the other, which sometimes lead to having sights like your front sight is. One way to correct your sight being so far out of center with the flat of the barrel, is by moving both the rear and front sight. Both sights may be off center with the flat of the barrel but it won't be as extreme as yours is. At least you were able to get it shot in.

There is always the possibility of a bent barrel. Hopefully not.

Thanks for the input, fellas. Looks like it is off to Jim for a check-up. Fortunately, I have got a .45 caliber barrel that just arrived today, and I am hoping that I can use that in the interim. Fingers crossed it doesn?t have the same issue.

Were both targets shot with the same gun? Sometimes I realize I took the wrong gun too. But it's always too late. And I don't believe I've ever shot a target over, and I ain't about to start now.

Some people would complain if they were hanged with a brand new rope, I swear! :o  A half inch down on elevation and that would have been 50-3X instead of a measly 50.  Some people's children!  :stooges:

I'm going to try to get out to shoot this week now that the weather forecast is for rain.  We need it; we're 2" low for the month.  The grass crinkles when you walk on it....

Anyway, I hope you do better next month....  :toast
