I hear ya on the .54, it would be my choice, too. But I'd probably go for a .40 instead if I wanted percussion (but flint is just better :laffing ) because it was pretty much The caliber in the near to mid 19th century as it was a small game gun (where did all the medium/large game go, hah!), easy on lead and powder, and a good hunter would have no problem harvesting deer and pigs.
