Fowler Bag???

Can I ask a kinda dumb question? Is a fowler bag a fowler bag simply because its used in conjunction with a fowler?

I guess most any bag could be used as a smoothbore bag.

But typically, it would be a bag expressley designed to be used for that.

For example, back when I was in the bag business, we developed a couple of fowler bags.  One of them came with game ties, pockets for over shot, cushion and over powder wads and you could get an optional shot snake sewn on the strap.  The main compartment was generous size, allowing a person to carry an 8 ounce powder flask easily.  It was a pretty deluxe bag.

Pockets on the outside with the flap covering the top of them?

Could be.  We made ours with the pockets on the inside.  But outside pockets woudl work as well.
Also made a bag divided into three sections.  The tops of the dividers were stepped so just by feel you could know where your hand was going.  I really liked that pouch.  It had a shot snake on the strap as well with an Irish Shot Head on it.  Pretty trick.

David. Here is one of Bigsmoke's bags from back in the days of October Country.
It is a great bag, and will carry a ton of necessities.
A short-starter and a powder measure on the strap is a grand ol' idea, and it's where ya need it.

Inside the bag....there's lots of room.
Mine, at the time of the picture, was only loaded with roundball and the fixings.
There is even enough room for a very PC co2 dis-charger for those friends of mine who do such things....

Most everything I see being called a fowler's bag is a multipocketed deal that would be from the 19th c. and later designed to separate the various modern cards and wads.
I like the 18th century and earlier styles that were adapted from hawking. I prefer the ones with the hinged openings that are carried on the belt.

I'm down to a couple flints,A turnscrew,small bag of shot ,and a wasp nest.I carry ball cartridge on a small beltbag(Too heavy around my neck)My shoulder slung bag is mostly full of tow and rags
