54 caliber Smooth Schimmel
« on: December 15, 2022, 04:57:37 PM »
Hello everyone, Here's the latest piece I've finished up. Inspired by the guns of Rupp, its a 54 caliber, iron mounted smooth Schimmel. The barrel is a Colerain smooth 54 caliber at 44 inches long, a tuned Dale Johnson lock, basic single trigger at 2lbs of pull. The stock is a lower grade curly maple treated with AF, trans-tint honey amber, and Lancaster maple stain, 4 coats of tried and true varnish oil, Lop 14 inches and overall weight is just at 6lbs. Thank you all for your time

Welcome to TMA.  I wouldn't mind owning that fine smoothrifle.  It's a beauty.

Don't be shy, give us particulars, Rob! Length, weight,LOP, etc. We can wait for the shooting report.
I'm  not  H/C or P/C or even a particularly  good shot but I have a hell of a good time!

Pretty much what Ettore said in his first post - 44" swamped Colerain full octagonal smoothbore bbl that measures .54 at the muzzle, Chambers Dale Johnson lock, single trigger with about a 2lb pull, 14" LOP, 6.2lbs unloaded weight, maple stock with some figuring that was finished with iron nitrate for the stain under a varnish sealer.  I've cast up .515" balls that I'll use with .015" lubed pillow ticking patches.  A very nice smoothie indeed!

It certainly looks like the same gun Ettore posted!  I haven't been here in a couple of days, did he put it up for sale or did you snag it with a private offer?  No matter, we need a report on how she shoots.  You are to be congratulated!

Ettore had it up for sale at ALR and that's where I bought it.  I was really looking for a .62 but this one looked real nice ... I like "plain Jane" guns.  8)  :wave
