My daughter and I got up early Saturday morning and headed the hour north to our little slice of turkey paradise we are allowed to hunt. They were already talking pretty weren't we got out of the truck. Went and got set up, made a few calls and just waited. Finally they all started waking up, but the wind picked up a little too. Some flew down way up the draw, but a handful flew behind us... Soon enough here comes a line of birds from our left and a tom strutting behind. I think he was maybe 10 yards... She got set with the little 20 gauge 870 that belonged to my little brother, I told her to make sure she plugged that head when he was turned. From there I'm not sure, I think she either closed her eyes or pulled down because she popped him and just knocked feathers everywhere ... Him and his harem made a hop and a jog back behind us and just went back to feeding an strutting...
In comes a tom and Jake and a few hens from the right now, but she was a little shaken and couldn't get on them before they headed up the trail. I did a lil talking and they stayed there at about 30 yards but she said she didn't feel comfortable with the shot.
Not but a minute later here comes that same string of birds from the left, with the Tom walking behind them. They were a bit more alerted, but she was able to get a bead on him this time and seal the deal about 15 yards out. I'll be trying sometime in the next few weeks with my trade gun. I just have to get some spare time found. This was bird#6 for her.. Always a blast to watch my kids hunt.
Taking a couple buddies up to my elk hunting spot in Wyoming this Thursday and do some looking for sheds, hiking, and maybe wet a line. It will be good to get away and see the mountains.
On top of all that, I've got an opportunity to be work as a fisheries biologist part time this summer into fall doing fish surveys, stockings, invasive aquatic species work etc. So I may get to learn a lot more than I bargained for. That on top of learning my new pastoral role is guaranteed to take 110% of any brain power I may have!
