I've been off here for a while, only to be confronted by this; Hard news indeed! 

I never met Joe in the flesh, but we did exchange PMs on various subjects
I will hold Mrs. Martin and the rest of the family up in prayer!

Wow, just came across this.  I communicated with him a lot in the early days, here and by mail.  Think when the executive board was using conference calls, he participated in those.  He had a strong faith, and always a different take on things, and was interesting and knowledgeable regarding 19th century history.  He participated over at ALR a fair bit, too.  A true buckskinner.  May he rest in peace.
