Mule Ear Rifles

How many people here own or have shot a mule ear?  They are a little rare as most rifles go.  How many have one with a half cock?

I don't but I do want to build one.  I think they are cool!   Can someone that has one post some pictures?

I had one years ago, I think it was a Pedersoli made gun.  That was one bizarre sight picture with the hammer sticking way out to the side like it does.  I found it  a bit distracting.
IRRC, it did not have a half cock notch.
I was considering buying a side slapper lock and converting a T/C flintlock, but sold the gun before I got around to it.

I had a 36 or 32? cant remember, for a couple months that I traded Hawkeye for, shot it a few times, no problem with the hammer being out to the side if you concentrate on your sights and the target, this one had a half cock, was an import of some type, don't remember the maker, sold it cuz the LOP was way too short and a Lady member of our club needed something to shoot, she still shoots it when she shows up to a shoot, dang thing is a tack driver!

I had to learn to concentrate on my sights when I first started shooting flintlocks.  It seems a mule ear would be no different.  The ignition on those rifles are quicker since the nipple points straight at the powder.  You would think someone would make them for target shooters anyway.

I forgot to ask in the original post, in what style they were made.  American, German, etc?

I would like to build one if I could just find a lock maker.

I came up with a blank on my first google search, but I just checked again and found Pioneer Arms Co. in PA for $125.  I may try one when I get my tax ref.  I still need to research what style is appropriate.

I wish that lock has a 1/2 cock.  An antique shop in Pensacola had an original for years.  It wasn't that expensive either.

Never have shot one but they look interesting.  Here is a pic of a double double I ran into in OK on a four barrel fowler.

Thanks for showing that.  I'll bet that gall darn thing is heavy!  Sure would hate all four barrels to fire at once!

It didn't appear to be that heavy.  It was quite delicate.  It also looked like a 20 ga.

I have a 50 cal mule ear plus a over and under 12 ga with mule ears. fun to shoot but I like my flinters.
