Anyone have knowledge with building smoking pipes.  Materials used, etc.  I`ve been wanting to build a long stem smoking pipe and really did know what was used. I`ve heard a little bit about using reeds for stems but not much to go on.

Just got the may/june issue of the Back Woodsman and it has a great article on how to  make clay pipes. Looking for a 5 gal can now !

  Well isn`t that a hoot. I have a subscription to Back Woodsman just haven`t recieved my new copy yet.

A piece of cherry, apple, apricot or pear wood will make a fine bowl.  You could also check on carving a piece of calcite (sp) or soapstone. Use a reed for a stem.

I have been making pipes out of pipestone from Pipestone National Monument.  Working with that stone is a pleasure.  People that I have given one of these pipe say they smoke fine.  I'm still looking for the right smoke to try out.
