Savannah....a let down
« on: May 25, 2011, 04:06:06 PM »
My wife and I are visiting Savannah and I must confess that I am pretty dissappointed. For a city that has sooo much history going back to the founding of the colony of Georgia, there is very little in the way of actually reading or experiencing much of it. Everything here is Civil War, Girl Scouts, Paula Deen, or ghost stories.....what a let down!

Although pre-revolution, we are holding out hope for Wormsloe tommorrow.....I really enjoyed it 10 years ago, hopefully it hasn't changed for the worse.

BTW, if you are interested in the founding of Georgia or the conflict between the English and Spanish in the southeast, definitely check out Frederica NM on St. Simon's island!!! It was a great stop and we both really enjoyed the walking tour they have there. It really brought the 1730's-1750's to "life" through archeology. Ft. KIng George is also highly recommended....they both get the blackpowderscout seal of approval-  :salute  :Doh!

They have a small re-enactment this weekend called the War of Jenkins Ear at Wormsloe. Early colonials who had to fight the Spanish. Starts this Saturday and goes on til Monday. The link has the info and you can look at the other parks in the area. I have to agree with you, it seems the folks here focus more on the Civil War than anything else.
Let me know if you are going this weekend, wife, son and myself are planning on being there for our first event.

Thanks FlyFisher! Unfortunately, we are headed back home Friday...we figured we'd get a good week in before the holiday rush.

It's been a long time but I remember the staff at Wormsloe to be very dedicated, so I'd imagine this event should be a good one. Do you know if they still do anything down at Ft. King George? I thought I remember reading about a "Debatable Lands" event awhile back.

I might stop back in there on the way home and ask what's going on this year.

BTW, we thoroughly enjoyed dining at The Olde Pink House, James Habersham Jr's c.1789 home!!! Awesome example a fine 18th century home.

You will find the same thing throughout much of the South.

Nothing happened before 1860.

Although all the stuff that "didn't happen" between 1771 and 1782 takes 4 volumes to list... (Nothing But Blood and Slaughter by Patrick O'Kelley)

I've been to Wormsloe for that very event..., I found it rather cool, but that was several years ago.  I don't know if it has changed.

What do you expect from the place in the South were the first question they ask is "What do you want to drink?"  That's how they survived Sherman.

Much of the East Coast is layered in tradition.  FIW/AIW/CW you just have to know which side of the road to look on. :Doh!

Well, Wormsloe was definitely worth the drive out of town. They were busy getting ready for this weekend's event. The weather was great! Warm, nice breeze, and no no'seeums. The film they have about Noble Jones and the early settlement of Georgia is entertaining. Without a doubt, if you are into the Pre-FI War settlement of the the southeast then Frederica, Ft. King George, and Wormsloe and St. Augustine (for the bad guy's side of things :rt th

Well the event at Wormsloe went well, sorry you had to miss it. Here are a few picts from this weekend. The folks there made me and the family feel extremely welcome.

There were a lot of folks there on Saturday and Sunday. It was hard to grab a bite to eat. Monday was slow, but there were still folks coming in.

I'll see if I can get some together Sir Michael. At the event, I was the one taking most of the picts.

Great stuff! I'll need to schedule a trip down for the Jenkin's Ear event next year.

If I was going to do a "War of Jenkin's Ear tour" what would you guys say are the must see sights and about how long (one day, half a day) would each take? I'd probably go drive down and try to see everything prior to the event and drive back after the event.

I'm thinking take a day to drive to Savannah, the next day do Wormsloe and King George, the following day do Frederica and Fort Mose returning to Savannah that night with the event starting the following day. Is that enough time?

Thanks in advance!
