Barrel Browing Problem?

I finally got around to browning the barrel on my rifle.  I'm using the Laural Mountain cold browning solution.  I've tried to follow the instructions but the results are not what I expected.  Some of the barrel is black rather than a rust color.  Is this normal?  How do I get it to the uniform rust brown color?  According to the instructions I'm at the point of washing it down in baking soda to neutralize the solution and then oiling it.

I had to use a humidity box to get it to work . I used an old drip coffee maker for heat and humidity at one end of box and a bowl of water with a sponge floating in it on other end . Did pretty well then .

if your still over on the coast , you have the humidity to rust the barrel without LM .
 the black is stain rust and should be carded off .
 when you apply LM you want to wipe on one coat thats heavy enough to completely wet the barrel area in the first pass .
 if you miss a spot , don’t try and go over it again . just let it be and catch it in the next  rotation

Cap is right on not trying to add to it till next go around . If you do you will get a copperish layer which will need removed before the brown will take ! I fought with it for a week untill I made the sweat box .

But , I am high desert and have a 20% humidity in a rainstorm

Thanks guys.  I removed much of the first attempt and tried it a second time and this time it doesn't look too bad.  Especially after I cleaned it up and oiled the barrel.
