Due to bein' out burnin' powder yesterday I missed a very important event.

21 April 1836

On this day General Sam Houston and the Texian forces defeated General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at San Jancinto.

The battle was over in 18 minutes and gave Texas its independence when Santa Anna was captured the following day.

The Texians lost 9 killed, or mortally wounded, 30 wounded.  The Mexican force lost 630 killed, 208 wounded, and 730 taken prisoner.

Was Santa Anna in disguise when he was caught? Or just in his nite shirt?

From what I've read he was "not in uniform".  Sources have it various as disguised as a private soldato, just wearing a simple blouse, or civilian clothes.

What is generally agreed upon is that his identity was unknown at capture.  He was found out only after the other captured troops called out to him as President/General.

Many wanted to hang him on the spot.  Houston would not allow it, because he knew that dead Santa Anna was valueless to Texas.

Now you've jogged my memory! I remember that part from a movie I saw, the regular soldiers calling out to General Santa Anna!

Sorry I couldn't be more specific.  Unfortunately Texas history is so intertwined with legend and myth that it's sometimes hard to find the real facts.

Even days and months after the events wild reports were being made.  Gary Zaboly has just had an excellent book released call "An Alter for Their Sons" that compiles what the press of the time was sayin' about the Alamo and the Texas Revolution.
