Following an old fur trade route along the north shore of Lake Superior in a reproduction 26' North canoe... when I was much younger.

Thanks Ron.
Get rid of everything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful, the portage will be much easier.

Longhunter, your photographs really bring back a few memories.  Did some long paddles following the voyageurs routes in the sixties.  As I recall, some of the portages were killers, and we packed light....no cargo in 90# pieds. lost all the photographs to parents house fire.

Woody, Sorry  you lost the photos. Our trip on the big lake was in the late 70's. It was over 100 miles and took a week to make. The shoreline was all Provincial Park, no settlement, it was much like it was 200 years ago.

Ron:

Our trip was from Fort Qu'Appelle near Regina, Sask. to  Lake Winnipeg.   Then up the lake to the Sask. River. . The lake part was no where near as much fun as the rivers, but it was a great trip, and really gave us an appreciation for the voyageurs. We where able to make several 50 mile days quite easily but gave up on trying for a 100.  Family followed us, so supply was easy. Tried one portage with two 90 pound sacks of sand just to see what it was like. Put this one down to young dumb males.   Just thinking about having to do this all day long until an entire cargo was moved  was the eye opener. Today I am not sure I could pick up a 90 pound sack let alone pack it up a hill.

Man, ain't that the truth.

Never been much for being on the water, but those trips sure sound like a phenominal experience.l  Bravo for you.

That'd be a trip I'd have loved to have been on.
