Yeah,.... personally, I'm a bit "conflicted" when it comes to destroying something as old and historical as the innards of anything that has historical value, especially when it's directly related to our nation's great struggle for independence.
It seems to me, they could have figured out a safe way to preserve the 200 year old gunpowder by rendering it inert.

I'm a self-proclaimed  "History  Nut" but I can't see the value in attempting  to  preserve sea-soaked enemy muntions. Just my  2 cents. Now if they were intact, whole different  story.

IMO,.... the "value" of such historical remnants are the same as anything else found from that period of U.S. history (whether completely intact, or not).... it's still (or, was) a piece of "the past" that is absolutely irreplaceable:)

..... and now it's gone forever, after finally realizing what it was.

Absolutely fascinating. I live in Virginia and even spend a week or more in Colonial Williamsburg every year. But I had never read or heard about this. Revolutionary War grenades, who would have ever guessed. History, ya got to love it.
