Eating DOG MEAT ?

Eating DOG MEAT ? Did our ML/BP Amer/Can forefathers/foremothers eat dogs ??  = YES !!

Examples --

During their 1803–1806 expedition, Meriwether Lewis and the other members of the Corps of Discovery consumed dog meat, either from their own animals or supplied by Native American tribes, including the Paiutes and Wah-clel-lah Indians, a branch of the Watlatas, the Clatsop, the Teton Sioux (Lakota), the Nez Perce Indians  and the Hidatsas.

During the times of Need, they were eaten by the NWC (as did others(?)) personal & families.
David Thompson mentions He ate ( also relates that His Wife (Charlette, told him that do to the bad winter, She (incld kids) &  all residents at the Rocky Mountain House (a major NWC Fur Trade Post) made it through, by eating the "sled dogs" +.

Looks like I'm in pretty good company. 
I've ate dog meat on more than one occasion,.... kind'a "stringy" but tasted alright.

This reminds me of the time at Rendezvous (Chadron Fur Trade Days) that folks were walking through visiting down in the camp after the Parade in town was over (as they normally do), and at Steve Donker's camp - a visitor asked Steve what happened to his poor little dog with only three legs???

Steve (and Rondo knows Steve) said,,, "it was a tough winter, but we got by..."

I remember that lady pausing for a bit, then,,, "oh my god, that poor little dog..." I thought she was going to throw up!!! LOL!!!

Steve then told her how she lost one of her rear legs...

I'll always remember that, and just as then - I still get a chuckle out of it now...

  Awesome quote! Definitely will be using that ASAP. I have also eaten dog on a couple of occasions, but of course, horse meat is far better IMO.

Having spent way too much time in Asia during my career, I've  eaten dog in a couple different countries. In some it's  a specially breed raised just for food, in others it's a meal of opportunity. I make no judgments, just eat what I'm  served like a good guest.

Yes Sir! I've eaten some of the biggest chicken legs you've ever seen at corner barbies in Olongopo PI, I tell ya fellas they don't grow chickens that big! and I know I've eaten dog in Korea,  Dog is a fine meal!

Nessmuk, thanks for your comment. It is something I was thinking about posting about, as well. I've been privileged to work/visit in over 110 countries around the world. I have often been a guest at meals where I have had to struggle to "be a good guest." From eating worms in South Africa to boiled lamb lung in Armenia, I have done whatever necessary to "enjoy" the food I've been served.

The point is that being a good guest means never doing anything to knowingly embarrass my hosts, most of whom live in unbelievable poverty. I am not planning on ordering a couple of prime Great Dane steaks anytime soon. But if it is served to me I will do my best to savor them...and compliment the cook.

Gentlemen, I have been told that I have in fact ate dog meat before.
And, there's a chance I may have to eat it again.
However, If that should ever come to pass, I just want you all to know it's going to be after the fight. 
Hot Dogs on a stick is about as much bravery as I can muster nowadays.
And I actually prefer them them on a bun with Mustard and Hot Chili Sauce.

I was thinking about the three legged dog Joe mentioned, and I wondered if he was like the Pig that was simply too good to eat all at once, So they took a shoulder with each seasonal change until they ate him all up....too good a Pig to kill all at once.

Years ago on the way to Western Nationals, Tex Markum picked up a stray dog along the road. He got to camp and had it tied to it's lodge. It wouldn't stop barking. Someone went to him and complained about the barking. Had they known Tex, they wouldn't have dared say a word. He tomahawked the dog, skinned it and ate it. The flat landers didn't bother him anymore that week.

It also reminds me of some Sioux from the Dakotas heading to a pow wow in Montana. These guys had never been off the rez in their life, and were hungry.
They stopped at a hot dog place, went in and placed their orders. The hot dogs came, the first guy unwrapped his, got a angry look on his face. He asked the others, "What part of the dog did you get?"

The American Legion had a wild meat supper one night and they served up Bob Cat, Coon, Beaver, and (what they called) "Mystery Meat",.... I never did get the cooks to tell me what the Mystery Meat was but it was pretty good.
