Reminds me of crossing the Equator in 1963, and the ceremony for becoming a "shellback" in our own US Navy.  The implement used was termed a shillelagh, although it wasn't a blackthorn cudgel but pieces of fire hose, whacking those being inducted as they ran between two lines of "old tars".  And meeting Neptune, who looked suspiciously like one of the Chief petty Officers....

Another interesting  find, Puffer. Thanks for sharing.

When I  crossed the equator in 1978, the only "ceremony " I  got was an announcement  in my headset. "Gentlemen , we just crossed the equator."
I guess crossing in an Air Force C-130 Hercules  doesn't  have the panache  of crossing in a Navy ship.
I'm  not  H/C or P/C or even a particularly  good shot but I have a hell of a good time!
