New to me

[Ole Scratch]

Back in the mid 70s when I started shooting smokepoles, I got my first rifle.  My Dad did’t have one so he asked my uncle if he could borrow his so we could hunt together.  It was a kit he put together.  T/C Renegade .54 cal.  I thought it was the best thing I had ever seen.  We hunted many years together, I got different rifles but Dad used the Renegade.  My Dad passed in 2008 and I took the renegade back to my uncle and told him if he ever got rid of it, I wanted first shot at it.  Last weekend he gave it to me!!  I know it’s just an old smoke pole and isn’t worth all that much but it is my pride and joy.  My Dad and I had so much fun made memories hunting together with charcoal burners.  Yes, I cried when he gave it to me.  Thanks for your time reading this, just had to tell someone.  <>< Del

What a great story.
Goes to prove that although the physical item might not have a lot of cash value, the memories it evokes are priceless.  Now, go bag a deer with that old Renegade, just for your dad.
Sure wish I could get my first Renegade back, but like an idiot I sold it.  It's long gone by now.

Thank y’all for good words.  One day when I get time, I may write a book about our exploits.  I will be a gut ripper for sure.  We had more hunting with them anything else we did

Ole scratch, I honestly ENVY you having hunting memories with your dad... I have only a few small game memories as my MOM didn't like being left alone, and Dad was VERY compliant so we didn't do a deer camp til I was in my mid 20's... I had to teach Pop much about hunting and we never got a deer together.. se le vie.


I asked my Uncle to let me have first dips on his Dad, My Grandpa's 12 ga... he didn't...his Son thru marriage wanted to sell it to me after my Uncle died and I told him to shove all 30" of its bbls where the sun doesn't shine...

I have some fond memories of fishing with pop, but few deer hunting...he did get one or 2 in his years...usually close to home after I reloaded ammo and helped him get "on target"... but I wasn't there... That was not smoke pole but I did a lot of that on my own...

WHEN my dad was born  oct 19th 1919, my grand dad, bought him a 16 ga crescent davis doubble barrel shotgun, he loved rabbit hunting back in pennsylvania where i grew up, he  died in 1999, i still hunt grouse, with that shotgun up here in wa. statethe memories that shotgun brings back everytime i touch it are priceless.

  I have my grandfathers old fencing pliers.  I know, not exciting but every time I see them, I remember how his good nature made dull, mundane chores actually enjoyable.  Pleased to hear your story!
