The MREs I have had were basically C-rats without the cans or cardboard box.  Everything in super thick plastic bags.  Maybe they were the second generation and not freeze dried?  Anyway, you didn't need to carry extra water to eat them, unlike what the backpackers pay good money for....

I do recall some of the cigarettes we'd get in them - and that was just luck of the draw. Chesterfield, Lucky Strike, L&M, and some others... I don't think I ever got one that had Marlboro in? I expect there were more brands that escape me.
