Busy work

Figured while I wait for my KNO3 and sulfur to arrive I'd work on balls n boards for the .62 Fowler.
 Still having trouble finding #11s locally so better get the flintlock tuned up I guess.

 I'm still learning my furnace . the balls have some wrinkles or sometimes a divet.  I have a IR thermometer but not sure I use it correctly.
 Just a hell of a lot of fun for me to be out in the shop.

 This is my favorite block so far.  Maple with a small perc cap holder stuffed with raw lambs wool.  Natural waterproofing.

Man, I saw the shot of the loading block with the percussion caps in it and I thought they were mini muffins.   
You can tell where my mind is.  At least part of the time.
Heck, making a bag like that might qualify you to get a part time job at October Country?
All in all, it looks like you have been having a good time out in the shop.
Keep it up with the round ball casting.  I think wrinkles signify the lead is a bit cool.  Look for about 700 degrees and see what happens.

I was just over there getting some flints
 I could certainly learn a thing or two from their leather work.
  That would be a fine job indeed.
 This muzzleloader stuff has given me new purpose it seems.

Wow!  You have what many of us call, "good stuff"!  I've been casting ball around 55 years and never have worried over a few minor wrinkles, which, IMHO, come with the territory.  Since I don't shoot matches - where it might make a difference - I find them as accurate as "perfectly" cast ball.

  I didnt think the wrinkles would effect anything.
 I just have this issue with making things and then focusing on the mistakes I made.  It's a curse.
 All's good,  made some home made BP and that goes whoosh some I'm happy.
 I have a new idea for a loading block so stay tuned.

When I was shooting my October postal target using the rebuild CVA Bobcat, the first shot wouldn't go off.  It has been so long since I shot a percussion rifle I neglected popping a cap or two before loading and of course, the antechamber and bolster must have had oil in them.  Anyway, I ended up pulling the ball with the ramrod.  The puller screwed into the ball and made a fine mess of it.  I didn't want it to go to waste so when I reloaded I used the "screwed up" ball for a sighting shot.  It went dead center in the target I was using at 25 yards so I don't think the wrinkles will make much difference unless you are a very serious target shooter!
