Percussion Caps
« on: May 03, 2026, 04:30:11 PM »
I just got an order from Graf's for percussion caps.  I went whole hog for 2500 caps (10 tins of 250 each).  Final cost was $240 with shipping & hazmat fees.
At the rate I shoot, I have enough to last me this lifetime, plus the next.  :lol sign

I'll need to dust off the cap gun the next time I go to the range!

It's good to know Winter Hawk is good to go with the cap gun for a while.

Nice to be stocked up!
I think I have around 2500 also
Mostly cci but some Remington and an old Dixie gun works red plastic " tin" of #11. They don't seem to be the same as todays #11,  they're a touch small in the diameter department.
Recently picked up 1000 cci caps for 80$ .

Don't have any cap guns. But I saw prices of caps, and I think you got a bargain.

Yesterday my friend showed me a picture of a small tin that contained Eley percussion caps. He said he thought he saw a #8 on the tin. Was there ever a size #8 cap, and what would they have been used on ? A guy was cleaning house and offered him 3 of these tins. My friend told him he better hang onto them because they could be worth a lot of money. For fun he looked them up on his phone, and said they could be worth about $150 apiece.

Eley seems to have had a two-pronged approach to cap sizes.  On the one hand they offered caps made for specific guns (e.g. "Colt's PT Belt and Pocket Pistols").  On the other hand. . . I think they had a few drinks and threw darts at a dart board, added up the points, and there was the name.  I've seen Eley caps marked #1, #3, #4, #5, #100, #150, and names like (IIRC) "India #2".

Things like cap and nipple sizes just weren't standardized; some companies (including Eley) offered retailers a set of gauges to help customers get the right size.

I have 9800 CCI caps, all bought at Wai-Mart for $5.97 per tin, Does that make me a Bargain hunter or a hoarder?
I'm  not  H/C or P/C or even a particularly  good shot but I have a hell of a good time!

If you've got a decent supply of powder and lead to go with the caps, I think it makes you well-prepared.  Back during Covid, and the year or two after, I was amazed at the people who waited til the last minute to get ammo/components for deer season.  They'd always waited til the last minute and nothing, not even a world-wide pandemic, was going to change that.  Buying supplies while they are available just makes sense.

I think of "hoarders" as those guys who knew the delivery schedule of every gun store and were waiting outside to buy all the ammo and sell it on Gunbroker at a 500-1,000% markup.

#1075, which I understand is a compromise between #10 and 11.
