Files
« on: June 07, 2010, 02:19:09 PM »
Does anyone know where I can get decent files for wood and metal for gun building?  I am especially in need of very fine teeth for metal and wood.  It is frustrating to go to the local hardware stores and see the files they offer.

Ron, you can get good files from Woodcraft, and also Enco machine supply, one of the files you will  want to have is a #49 Nicholson wood rasp, a little spendy, around 40 to 50 bux, but well worth the investment, this rasp cuts wood instead of shredding it!, do a search for the 49 and you may find it as cheap as 29.99 on ocassion at certain supplers

I just picked up a 2nd cut Nicholsen 8" cabinet rasp from a Ind. Supplier here in town for 18 bux , last one on shelf . Real small teeth , 7 in a row and the next row was offset 1/2 tooth from first row and so on . Tried it and man it cuts smooth !

At your local hardware store look for Nicholson/Black Diamond brand.........most of these though are for general use and you won't usually find the finer toothed ones.

jamestowndistributors.com

they have a free catalog and a good website

MSC is good.  You can find machinist files with "safe" sides.  Grainger is another source, as is Brownell's.  I like Grainger, because I can get instant gratification by going down the street to their store.  I would like MSC as much if they were close by, but I believe the files are from the same makers, so no real dif.
