My Re-Handled Bowie
« on: July 14, 2016, 01:13:48 PM »
.

I decided to re-handle my Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie last week, as after some use, I decided that I didn't really care for the issue rubber bumper.

(before)

Cutting the rubber off was E-Z-Peazy, the brass (wrist thong) ferrule a tad more difficult, and as you can see below, they're made with a hidden tang that's the thickness of the blade, and a cross-guard that's supported/held by two small steel plates welded to the sides of the tang.(I'm guessin'  the rubber wouldn't support it)

When I inletted the new handle for the tang, I also inletted the forward center section a bit more, to allow for the extra thickness added to the tang by the support plates.

I used a stick of black/white Ebony I found online @ one of the woodworker supply websites (below).

That Cold Steel Bowie is one heck of a good knife.  Your treatment of it made it an even better knife.
15 years ago or so, Cold Steel had a version of that with stag instead of rubber grips.  They were sweet, but a tad bit on the pricey side.  I think they only brought in a few per order, so they were not real plentiful.

Thanks for the kind words, folks !

Believe it or not, I once had bought a new Cold Steel Stag Trailmaster - but moved it on because, after I used it a bit, I realized that the stag had more downward curve than I liked.
