Whitworth ?

Just picked one up, anyone have any load data ? I'm shooting the Lyman 457162 postell, with a hex wad.

Try 85 grains of Swiss 2f.

You'll have to size the bullet down to bore size of your Whitworth. Use a soft lead to allow the bullet to upset into the rifling. A good cleaning regime with the Whitworth is essential for best accuracy. If you can source one, get an hexagonal jag so you can get the rifling clear of fouling.

One cleaning routine is to load powder then a tight fitting hex wad. Clean down to the wad with a damp patch then dry, followed by the bullet.

The nipples can burn out quickly; a platinum lined nipple will prevent this.

Unfortunately with the price of platinum the nipples are expensive. Joe Hepsworth (www.jcunard.com) in the US and Jeff Tanner in the UK (www.jt-bullet-moulds.co.uk/Accessories.htm) can supply the nipples.

If you want to do a lot of shooting then they are recommended and were used in the 19th century. Pressure generated in these .45 cal rifles is high and the hot gases will erode the flash hole. This can lead to the hammer being momentarily lifted with subsequent loss of pressue and and accuracy.

I found out  that, if you shoot lefty, you have to wear a long sleeve shirt  :shock: , I suspect the nipple I have in there is eroded, so I'll order a platinum one from here

All that work between shots seems a little bit anal retentive for me.  That's probably why I stick to a patched roundball. Dump in the powder, lay a patch on the muzzle, add a ball, drive 'em onto the charge, prime and shoot.  

Bless you guys who have more ambition in your little fingers than I've got in my whole carcass.  

Like I tell folks, I've suffered most of my life from  random fits of ambition.  I've learned that if I simply lie down quietly for half an hour or so when I feel one coming on,  it'll pass harmlessly.

.... but you're missing the pleasure of a nice slow fire discipline and the satisfaction of accurate shooting at 1000 yards with fine British match rifles.

For ease of shooting you need an Enfield not PRB. Drop the powder in, seat the Minie bullet and you're good for 600 yards.

Sorry to say that long time shooter and friend, Joe Hepsworth, passed away last week. He leaves behind a host of friends all over the world and was addressed by many at his memorial. He was a fixture at Camp Butner, Camp Perry, Bisley Camp and many other ranges and will be sorely missed.
