Would Botas be acceptable wear for a free trapper in the Rockys? Have wool leggings, looking fer somethin a little cooler and less snaggy. :horse

GH...I don't see what would be wrong with them if that's what ya want to wear.  You wintered down around Taos and picked up some of the Mexican ways...it happened...that's for sure and for certain  :rt th

I made a pair of trapper pants cause I didn't have enough buckskin to make full length so I made a pair of botas to wear below the knees. Take the botas off and it's almost like wearing shorts.  :)

I agree with Two Steps, and I often wear them myself.  Mine are fringed - not like those that would have come strait out of Taos, but more like a trappers squaw would have made.

From the four Sketchbooks that I have which cover that era:
 - In The Image of A.J. Miller - no mention
 - The 1837 Sketchbook of the Western Fur Trade - no mention
 - A Shining Time Vol. 1 The Fur Trade - 2 examples of blanket knee high leggings (basically wool botas)
 - Mountain Man Sketchbook vol 1 - one example of highly decorated Taos botas
