Legal for hunting now, so what to get?

Just to add to the handgun conversation for info only.

In Colorado you can carry any handgun during any season for self protection. You can even carry it concealed. However, you can only use it on game in rifle seasons if it's meets the minimum specs. If you were to use it to finish off an animal in bow, or muzzleloader seasons it's illegal. However, in any season you can use it to protect yourself from attack.

Personally, i've never carried a handgun, and in 60 years of hunting i've never needed one. If I was the type to get scared I might carry bear spray.

Pistols are a personal choice--BUT---bigger is usually better, much better.  16 bore flint military style pistol, groups very well at 20 yd.  50 gr 2f....Tom

My Glock 17 is always there but being a moral hunter it is not used for game or hunting. By the way that is not allowed by F@G in NH but who cares?

Pardon me? Are you a moral hunter, or aren't you? You won't use the Glock because of your morals, yet it's always there. In the same breath you don't care if it's allowed or not?  

Makes perfect sense to me.  It's for self-defense and the thinking goes it better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

I have heard it said: "There is no replacement for displacement." I believe that fellow was talking about making horsepower in a pulling tractor, but I also believe it fits with this discussion.

My home state just approved the use of muzzleloading handguns (single shot, breech loading, minimum of .45 caliber) for use during the big game seasons (deer and bear).  So, of course, now I "need" one.

I'm considering either the Pedersoli Kentucky flintlock in .50 or .54, the Pedersoli Bounty in .50, or the Jim Chambers American Flintlock Pistol in .54.  Any recommendations or thoughts on these three?  Anything else I should consider?

Yes, for some odd reason, I'd prefer a flinter.

A muzzleloading breech loading pistol... Ain't never seen one.  

I would assume there is more to the new regulation than listed here. In Washington there is a minimum barrel length, a minimum bore and a minimum charge (well, the manufacture of the pistol has to have it listed to load with a minimum charge anyway.) I would start there and work my way up.

As for the personal protection side of the question. That is up to the individual. I know my decision and my reasoning, that is all that maters to me on that subject.

You may consider choosing the same caliber as your long arm,for simplicity sake if nothing else. Also would justify more flint pistols ( if you have more than one long gun for deer hunting)

I am not a FUDD no F&G law can deny me the right to carry arms, especially the right to life protection. Moral yep all the way don't like it to bad. Bend over all you want I will NOT
