Primitive TC sights

Picked up a real nice TC Hawkin this weekend. I would like to replace the factory sights with something more appropriate. I would still prefer the rear sight be adjustable if possible. I have seen a long bar sight that is drilled for the TC but I cannot find any. Anybody got any ideas or suggestions?

I believe that I have the buck horn style from Track of the Wolf that is drilled for a TC however it is not adjustable.  I would have to go dig it out and make sure as it has been a while.

One suggestion would be to check out the sights available through Track of the Wolf.  You could always dovetail a rear sight into the barrel. Chances are you may need to change out the stock TC front sight as well. Good luck with whichever way you go.

Instead of milling a dovetail in the barrel I had though of milling off the dovetail base on a sight and having it drilled for the TC screws. That way I can use any sight that is long enough.

I cannot remember the exact configuration, but The Hawken Shop offers an iron conversion set for T/C's.  I believe one of the parts is a buckhorn sight.  But I cannot recall if it is a dovetail sight or screw on; fixed or adjustable.  Strangely enough I had one of them on a rifle many years ago and I looked through that sight thousands of times - but I cannot recall any details of it.  Duh!!
But, it has been 30 years since I stupidly sold that rifle, so...

OK, just looked up the Hawken Shop and they do have the sight listed.  It appears to be fixed and is $16.00.  It is as cast so some cleanup will be necessary.  I would imagine the mounting holes would need to be drilled.

Instead of milling a dovetail in the barrel I had thought of milling off the dovetail base on a sight and having it drilled for the TC screws. That way I can use any sight that is long enough.

Precisely what I did.  I took a file to the dovetail on a rear sight I picked up from Track, drilled it in the middle for a screw and screwed it down to the barrel.  I plan on getting a narrower one as this one sticks out on the sides a bit.  I'm using a regular T-C blade front sight.  I believe I filed the rear down a touch for elevation, and took a hack saw to the slot to square it off.

One thing nice about that is you have another screw hole forward if the day would come where the sight (because of one's eyesight) would have to be moved forward.

Also, (and I wasn't thinking about this when I made my previous post), any windage adjustment can be taken out at the front dovetail sight if ever needed. Looks good.

Okay, I just did some measuring on the T-C.  It's the Pennsylvania Hunter with the octagonal to round barrel, 15/16" across the flats.  The rear sight I used is the Tall Pennsylvania Sight from Track, which the catalog states is .425" tall from the top of the sighting surface.  I was incorrect is saying I filed down the rear sight; it was the front which I did that to.  The rear measured exactly .425" from the top of the barrel flat.  The front sight shows where I took the top off a little, and it measured .358" above the barrel.

Track sells this sight in two widths, one for "up to 7/8 inch", #RS-FG-14-T, or "for up to 1 inch", #RS-FG-16-T.  It seems to be the tallest primitive sight they have.

Windage was indeed adjusted by driving the front sight over a scrunchum.  You could probably get a small amount of adjustment by rotating the rear sight left or right.  If I did that it would have to be a very small movement or the sight would appear crooked on the barrel.

A person could make their own easily enough from a small piece of angle iron, drilled for the screw and then a slot cut in for the sight.  It would certainly be cheaper than paying $8 + shipping!  I may have to try that, just for grins.
