Fixed Rear Sight Adjustment (Rear Sight Cant)
« on: December 16, 2018, 03:23:50 PM »

Last year before going to the Rendezvous with this rifle (picture above) I changed out the fixed rear sight and did some work on the stock (filing/sanding/staining) and to be quite honest - it just never shot as well as it did previously to the work I had done to it.

Today I decided to take a better look at this rifle and when I would shoulder it (just like this past year after the work I did on it) it just seemed to me that I had a slight "cant" in my hold when cheeking it.  I didn't think much of it as I told myself (well, I just have to get use to the new configuration I did to this rifle, and the fact that I also changed it out from a "Caplock" to a flintlock...)

Today I put the caliper to the rear sight and sure enough the off Lock side of the rear sight was about maybe 3 to 5 thousands higher then the Lock side of the rear sight... :Doh!

Well I removed the rear sight and got the files out and squared that dovetail down to read true on both sides and middle where the rear sight snugs in, reinstalled the rear sight / shouldered the rifle and by golly that "cant" is gone! Everything feels right now with shouldering and cheeking this rifle once again.

I only mention this for others to be aware not to make the same mistake I made when installing (in my case replacing) a rear sight.  Make sure you double check and check again that there is no cant in that rear sight.  Apparently I must have been so concerned about the new brass blade front sight being all squared up that I "skimped" on my checking of the rear sight... :o  Now I just need some decent weather to go check this rifle out again and get it zeroed... Uncle Russ, I now think this rifle will be a contender with ol' Candle Snuffer... :bl th up

Joe, I have found out that it is indeed the many "little things" that make a rifle a real shooter, as opposed to a rifle that just shoots.

As Kees so aptly pointed out, "ya can't have a cant" and expect a Candle Snuffer.

Like so many others over the years, I was unable to see the forest for all the trees in front of it, so it had to be something inside the barrel that was giving me "Pie Plate" size groups.
Maybe the Patch, or the thickness of the Patch, or the Powder Charge, possibly even the lot # of that Powder?
But after a frantic search, you realize nothing has changed here.

Few people take the time to "really" check their sights....if the sights are still attached to the barrel, and looked okay to the eye, then it has got to be something else, soooo after doing your normal checks, scrubbing the barrel for the umpteenth time,  you tighten the lock, tighten everything else you can get a screwdriver on, and call it good-to-go.
But....at the Range, you find yourself using words you wouldn't dare use in Church, and your Rifle has just been called everything under the Sun but what it really is.

All that you have accomplished, in many circumstances, is made things even worse......now you have the tail chasing the Cat.

There is a very old, but very true adage of change only one thing at a time....this "adage" has merit and is worth its weight in gold.....not to mention time-saving!

Good post, Joe
I hope you do have another Candle Snuffer, it's always nice to have two or three of those around.

Russ...

Yeppers, you CAN'T have a CANT!

Amen to that, Kees!  :bl th up

Russ, all I can say is I just got lucky finding this as you're right on the money about everything we try to make our smokepole's shoot to point of aim. I'm hoping this Wednesday when I'm off I can get out to the Range (weather permitting as it's suppose to rain - yes rain / not snow), so I hope I get a chance to put it to the test.

One of the first things I did tonight when I got home from work was get some coffee and shoulder this rifle. It came up as natural as natural can be to my shoulder and cheek and there was no sign of a cant in my hold what-so-ever,,, so hopefully the Range test may bare out some better shooting results with this rifle.  :bl th up
