What the best way to remove bluing from a barrel?

There are several methods and chemicals, but I have used Naval Jelly with excellent results.

I'll second the navy jelly. It took 95-98% of the bluing off on mine and gave the barrel a light aged patina look.

Birchwood Casey Blue and Rust Remover is another option.

It left a very light grey color after removing browning on a pistol barrel

FWIW - the BC stuff has phosphoric acid as it's active ingrediect - the same as Naval Jelly and the Naval Jelly is usually much cheaper.....Coke also has phosphric acid in it - the reason it will it the paint off your car if left too long!

Plain old white vinegar will also remove the bluing, Don't ask how I learned this :(

There's a great deal of difference between "Navel" and "Naval".  Details matter.  :evil:

Rinse the barrel with Liquid Drano.  Takes it right off.  Be sure you wear gloves, goggles, and catch the runoff in a plastic bucket.
