Mackinaw Fusil?
« on: September 05, 2012, 08:33:40 PM »
Has anybody ever heard of a Northwest Trade Gun refered to as a Mackinaw Fusil?

A guy I was talking to the other day told me that "back in the day" Northwest guns were often called Mackinaw Fusils in the old northwest territory because so many were sold or traded through Fort Michilimackinac and the American Fur Company store on Mackinac Island. I`ve never heard the term myself but being from Michigan I kinda like it.

I know that Northwest Guns had to have been fairly common in the area because in a display of actual dug artifacts at Colonial Michilimackinac are some gunparts such as a serpent sideplate and Northwest style brass buttplate and ramrod thimbles. Also some earlier French style fusil parts.

Glad to hear others have heard of, and use the name. I like it but didn`t want to use it if it was just something coming from someone that didn`t know what he was talking about.

Pathfinder... I was also at Michilimackinac a few weeks ago. Very cool place. They`ve done alot of work there since my last time there back in the 80`s.

RiverCat Sir: in reference to your byline: the best time to interrupt your enemy IS when he's making a mistake. A tomahawk between the eyes, for example! After all, he is/was your enemy. P.S. Seein as your from the "sunset side of the thumb", congrats on at least bein upwind of ole Pathfinder's place. Ya just never know what he's cooking up next. He's a great guy, regardless of what the majority might say. I just got back from the fall shoot at Friendship and tryin to have a little fun. Have a great day!!!!  Buzzard
