You could use a ball mill to dish the face of the plug and then grind a scraper to the same radius.
It would get rid of the groove without shortening the plug and be much easier to keep clean.

yep, that's one option i had thought of since i have a 5/8" ball cutter for the lathe.  putting a radius to a brass scraper would be easy, too.
