RCBS casting furnace with PID
« on: March 23, 2018, 07:03:29 AM »
for those who cast their own balls 'n' bullets, midway usa has a sale on this new PID ladle casting furnace and RCBS has a $25 rebate to boot.  the sale price is $110 + shipping and for me that came to $97 after the rebate.

i have 2 lee 20# pots, one for 1:20 and one for 1:30, and a small lyman 8# pot for pure lead.  these are all ladle pots, i don't like bottom pours.  i'm gonna run this 25# rcbs for 1:16 paper patched bullets and test out its PID capabilities.  however, truth be told for casting muzzleloader balls, a small and cheap 4# lee and a ladle is all that's needed and as good as a larger capacity and far more expensive furnace.  moulds are a diff'rent story entirely.  you get what you pay for, usually.  the only exception for me are the lee ball moulds - they're usually pretty good for $20 as opposed to $75 for a lyman.

Looks really nice.
In looking at the unit, I get what the 850 is, the temperature of the lead.
What I am wondering is what is the 78 reading?
Also, not being much into casting, what does PID mean?  If you are not casting very fast, you are just PIDling around?  lol
Like I say, I am not much into casting, so I don't know all the special terms.

Bigsmoke

The PV is the present value (temp) of the pot and the SV is the set value (temp). This from the owners manual. Hope this helps.
