Happy Independence Day!

March 2,

Texas declares independence from Mexico

On this day in 1836, Texas became a republic. On March 1 delegates from the seventeen Mexican municipalities of Texas and the settlement of Pecan Point met at Washington-on-the-Brazos to consider independence from Mexico.

George C. Childress presented a resolution calling for independence, and the chairman of the convention appointed Childress to head a committee of five to draft a declaration of independence.

In the early morning hours of March 2, the convention voted unanimously to accept the resolution. After fifty-eight members signed the document, Texas became the Republic of Texas. The change remained to be demonstrated to Mexico.

It's hard to imagine that the security of such documents was so lax for such a long period.  

This is not the first time I've read that Southern Methodist (SMU) was somehow, someway, involved in returning, or recovering some sort of precious document....at the same time, remember when Texas School of Mines was Changed to UTEP? They were right in the middle of that mess.
I have to say that SMU has some very wealth benefactors, and with that kind of backing, strange things do have a way of happening!

I don't mean to be condescending toward SMU, in fact, quite the opposite. It's kinda like saying money really does talk, if you get my drift.
