Clothing Questions

I am part of an organization that depicts a fur trade company based in Texas. I am wanting to portray a leather works shopkeeper...sort of a craftsman that has a couple of "employees" and we all make various things and sell them from a tent "store". Now, what would be the proper attire for me? The time period is roughly 1825-1830?

I'll take a shot at this.

Drop/fall front Trousers -  (just about any fabric from wool to Russian sheeting, corduroy was common)
Non-elastic braces
Drop sleeve pull over shirt - (linen or cotton) level of success would dictate quality of material note that the collar should be worn up all the way around the neck and held that way with the neck cloth
Neck cloth - (generally white, black was a military thing although it could be used) note: the tying of the neck cloth was an art form during this period there are several sources for the types of knots typically used.
Shoes, short boots, riding boots - (which ever fits your fancy)  Note: If wearing shoes, mid-calf height leather or canvas gators could be worn to prevent sand and rocks from getting in your shoes.
Waistcoat - (just about any type of fabric is acceptable but it should match or go with the material chosen for the rest of your clothing.  It was common for the waistcoat to contrast the frock coat and match the trousers)
Frock Coat - (again a wide variety of materials can be used but care must be taken to match the level of success you are trying to portray and the quality/material of the rest of your clothing.)
Hat - (top hat, broad brimmed hat, straw hat, or even a straw top hat another consideration would be the peaked mechanics hat try to stay away from the "wheel hat" it is a military design not a typical civilian and a bit early)

You might also want to consider substituting items of Spanish style clothing that blend with the rest of your clothes.

Try not to get to ornate, as a craftsman/merchant you would be at the lower end of the gentlemen class working your way up.

Good luck with this :toast  :shake
