I found this book the other day.  It is the The Autobiography of Gurdon S. Hubbard.  He joined the AFC in 1818 as clerk at the age of 15.  It includes quite a bit of detailed information on life in the wild as a clerk with the AFC and even includes an interesting description of his manner of dress after being in the woods for a time.
