Removing stamps on barrels

I'd like to get rid of the "BLACK POWDER ONLY" stamps on my 1858 Pietta revolvers, and I'm wondering if maybe they can be "burnished" out with a hard steel rod (of some sort)?
The stamps don't appear too awful deep, and I'm wondering if maybe the "displaced" soft iron of the barrel can be burnished back into it's original place without actually removing material.

Anyone ever try something like this?

I'd rather not draw-file the stamps away (if there's a better way), because I'm afraid the resulting "widened flat" would stand out like a sore thumb.  :rt th

They can be peened out and the the barrel drawfiled.

Many many light peens with a small peening hammer that is polished well. I personally accomplish it better by using a chisel that is formed to a peening ball and tapping it with a hammer.

Thanks again Capt. for the info,.... you've got me thinking about welding a "ball bearing" to the end of a short iron rod and using that (and a small hammer) to peen with.

as was said  you can peen it . but you have to be careful and go slow or you will end up with dimples that are harder to get rid of then  the  stamping .
 Your still going to have to draw file alittle
 For stamps that are to deep , I undercut them and fill them with wire . its time consuming.
