plated brass
« on: September 25, 2013, 06:36:41 PM »
A good friend gave me some brass kickplates for industrial doors but they are plated with chrome. Is there an easy or simple way to remove the chrome plating?
I think it would be good material for nose caps and patch boxes and inlays.
Any help appreciated,

Soak it in muriatic acid - this will usually remove it. Muriatic is available at most hardware/paint stores - it's used for cleaning and coloring concrete.

Do this WITH plenty of fresh air and do not breath the fumes, they are toxic.....

Thanks cb, I think before I do that I will try and find a plating shop locally and see if they will do a dip and strip for not too much cost, we'll see.
Thank you for the input though. :shake

Dan ,
CB is right . all you need is  to go to Home depo and get you some tile cleaner .
its only about 3-5% muric .
i used to use it all the time for cleaning up after a Tile job .  just soak you plate in it and  it will take the  crome plating right off .
as a note , it will also take the crome off od sink drain caps   ,  dont ask me how i know LOL
