1850 Percussion Pistol ID
« on: May 09, 2015, 08:07:17 PM »
Found this large caliber pistol and it also has a large nipple.  11#'s won't work and a standard nipple wrench is too shallow and narrow.  You can see where someone used the wrong tool on the nipple and I haven't found anything that fits.

Any help would be great.

I don't see a picture,... have you tried a musket nipple wrench?

I suspect that's what it is Riley,..... and I'm pretty sure, Track of The Wolf sells #11 nipples with musket threads.  :rt th

Thanks for the advice.  I was thinking of just changing out the nipple but I knew it wouldn't be so simple.
My motivation would be due to the difficulty in finding musket caps locally.
I was hoping a deep musket wrench would work however ordering one blind may be a waste.
Modifying a socket might be a good approach- got plenty of those lying around.

BTW- here's some more pix:

Below is a link to 3 pages of nipples Track of the Wolf has to offer.
Nipples - Track of the Wolf
Once you have your old nipple out, you can probably match it's base-diameter and number of threads (per-inch) with something that will accept common #11 caps.  :rt th

Any idea who made it, or where it was made?

My understanding is this is a Belgian Percussion pistol made for the North African Trade around 1840-50.
This and several other flint pistols have been in my family for since the late 1800's.
Have pix of those if you are interested.  One is quite nice.

This one is a British Flintlock Tower Pistol circa 1800- somewhat common but in very good shape.  Has all the stamps.
I have shot this one.
67 or 69 cal. I believe.  17mm barrel ID

This one is my favorite and I'm getting close to taking it out to see how it works.
A nicely engraved Spanish Migulet Pistol with the name/date of F. Scarafon 1816.
Have never been able to find anything under that name.  Maybe he's the engraver?
It has a very tight cocking spring but everything seems to function well.
