Another Visit to the Alamo

As a native Texian I have made dozens of pilgrimages to the Alamo. It is the center of Texas history and is one of those spots that is hallowed by the heroism of those that died there. Every time I visit I am again reminded that our actions have far greater consequences than we might ever imagine. The sacrifice of the Alamo's defenders set the stage for Texas independence.

What was a new angle for me on this visit was I was privileged to tour the site with my wife (on her first visit to Texas). Seeing it through her eyes helped me with a new perspective. When you look at the roll of the fallen defenders there are Irish, English and Scots among the heroes. So many of the United States of that era were also represented. My wife was quick to note that her home state of Michigan had no one at the Alamo. That has led to several interesting discussions of why that might be.

But in the end, I came away from the visit, as I always do, with a feeling of deep reverence for those brave enough to stand and fight when that is the last option. Sometimes we need to ignore the odds, look each other in the eye, spit into the sand, plant our flag and then say I ain't budging. if you want it, then "Come and Take It."
