Spent the day in the shop with my 6 yr old Grandson working on a pinewood derby car, trying to keep him from loosing a finger or needing stitches, it was like trying to keep a Ferret still! but still fun, he is his Father's son for sure, went through the same thing 36 years ago, man where did the time go?

We went to our monthly shoot yesterday and it was a cold, crappy, drizzly day, shooting 12" wooden dollar store Christmas Trees at 50 yards, various snowman and Rudolph paper targets and a 6' tall plywood grinch at 200 yards from the bench (2 shots each), then mini ball ornaments and 4" candy canes with pistol ( we only allow sidelocks at our shoots), had a good time shooting, wood stove at the back corner of out covered range was cranking, had a good home made chili lunch and this was our annual meat shoot, first 3 places per target picked from Turkeys, steaks and chicken to lunch and breakfast meats and we had a $10 white elephant gift exchange, despite the crappy weather it was a dang good day to be alive!

Those are the times that will live in your hearts forever, and you will forget about the cold, nasty weather.  It is replaced with the warmth of good friends being together. :toast :toast :toast

Got my boy out for his first deer. We had a beauty of a 4x at 90yards the night before and he couldn't quite seal the deal.. Then the next morning he decided on this muley doe at 125 ish and dropper her with a great shot and one of his handloads..
I filled my Muzzleloader tag this last Saturday on a big sandhills wt doe... My 54 Tryon... Otherwise just normal running kids and being too busy!

Sitting here trying to figure out why I have no desire to go out this last day of regular deer season, with my smokepole. I hope I have more desire to go in the late flintlock season.

Finished up the Christmas shopping earlier today, started some beef stew when we got home and I'm working on a fowler/ shotgun bag for an old customer.

Spent the better part of the day casting up some .66 caliber round balls for my 1760s Philadelphia fowler using my trusty Marty’s 4-cavity mold. There’s something awe-inspiring about holding one of these massive lead spheres in your hand—over 430 grains of pure lead! Of course, Bigsmoke would probably scoff at me referring to these balls as ‘massive’, but I digress.

It’s easy to see why large-bore smoothbores like this were so devastating on the battlefield or in the field. When you’re launching a projectile this size, it’s not just about accuracy—it’s about sheer impact. No wonder amputations were so common during the period; a hit from one of these wasn’t just a wound—it was catastrophic.

Fascinating, humbling, and a little terrifying to think about the realities of life (and combat) back then.
