Can't see anything
« on: April 20, 2026, 08:24:00 AM »
No wonder you can't see if you hit the target. Had our second shoot of the year yesterday. As you can see by the dress, it was cold and also windy. Aggregate score was fine. Shooting score was pathetic. But had a good time and great food with a bunch of good people. [ Invalid Attachment ]

Good thing the smoke comes after you pull the trigger.
Our club shoot is this coming Sunday but I believe the temperature will be in the 70s
Nice purse ya got there
I often wonder why folks carry such large shooting bags.
What ya got in there ??

Kevin,  I think the answer is "Everything".
Once years ago, I was heading back to Friendship and I planned on doing some shooting while there.  I had one of the October Country Traveler bags which is a big bag.  I had in it 2 boxes of .530 ball, a can of Ffg powder, a pint bottle of bore solvent, a couple of tins of caps and whatever other stuff I figured I might need.
Frankly, I have never cared for shooting boxes and don't own one.  I figure I can get everything I might need in a bag, and if I don't get it to fit, I don't need it.
Of course, after I got there I emptied it out.  I think it weighed about 32 pounds all told.  Much too heavy to carry around.
Tom, that's a great photo.  Only way it could have been better was if it was taken a millisecond faster and captured the fire in the pan or coming out of the vent.  Looks like it was a fun day.

Thank you John. And you are correct by answering Everything. But I would like to add, TOO MUCH.
When I started to shoot with the group I'm a part of, an older gentleman kind of took me under his wing. He made and gave me a lot of hand crafted items that he made. The knife and sheath attached to the bag, and the bag were just two of those items. If you look closely at the back of the bag, he even personalized it.
If you look at one of the old TMA brochures, there is a picture of an elderly white haired man taking a shot off of a cliff. He is the person I'm referring too.
This bag and all of his gifts to me are priceless to me. [ Invalid Attachment ]  [ Invalid Attachment ]

Tom, You are very fortunate to have scored a mentor who took to you in such a kind way.
Many if not most of us had to figure stuff out for ourselves, me included.
But at the end of the day, we have all had an interesting and rewarding journey.
You have some neat stuff there, and I cannot help but agree that they are all keepers.
I had to chuckle when I looked at all the things in your pouch, at one time I bought one of those folding knives for my kit as well.  I thought it made my kit much more authentic, right along with the plastic bag I carried my patches in.  That's me, nothing but PC, doncha know.  Yeah right, I am hardly a model of PC, whether that stands for Politically Correct or Period Correct.  I fail in both categories.

That's a nice picture - the fire coming out is impressive to me. I wonder if that  always happens. I don't see any when I shoot, but  then it probably only lasts a very short time, and in bright sunshine it can't be seen anyway.
Maybe I blink too!

Thanks Jim. One of the guys in our group takes a lot of pictures at our shoots. I think that fire comes out all the time. It's hard to see it when you're shooting the gun. If you have a fast lock and everything is working just right, you will have fire coming out of the touch hole and barrel at the same time.Of course, modern technology in photography equipment helps too.

Kevin, you did not offend me at all. I'll be the first to admit, my shooting  bag is too big and I carry more plunder than I need to. That bag is for the 50 & 54 rifle. The bags for the 32 & 45 caliber are smaller, but still have too much plunder in them.

Tom, The wise thing is to have a separate bag and powder horn for each rifle or shotgun.
Which firearm do you shoot the most?
I would mate that with this bag and horn.
Put the rest of the other caliber specific stuff into other bags.
It will work a lot better for you, I think.
That is what I have done and I really like it that way.
Which reminds me, I need another bag and horn for my smoothbore barrel that goes on the T/C PA Hunter that I just had converted to percussion.  I think I am going to really like it now.

I've got a bag for the 32, and one for the 45. But the one I posted a picture of, is still being used for the 50 & 54 right now. Might let that one the way it is. But you're right John, it does work better the way you suggested.

Now you got me scratching my head John. When I bought my first muzzleloader, a 50 cal.,I could have done that. But as time went by, and I invested in a few more flintlocks, I didn't have one being used more than another. And even today I use them all. In the course of a summer, I don't think I use the same one twice at our woods walks. And since I don't hunt as much anymore, I never know which one I might grab to go hunting. Plus, I would definitely have to buy more horns off of you. And, I don't know if Mrs. No Powder would allow that to happen. Decisions, decisions.  ;banghead;

Tom,
Ms Smoke and I have an agreement.
For purchases over $100 we have to discuss the situation.
However, for things under that sum, as long as we don't abuse the situation, we can go ahead and enjoy the fruits of our labor, past and present.
It works for us, it could for you as well.
As long as you have an agreement first.

:hairy John, I really like the plan of attack for spending, that you and Mrs. Smoke have put together. If we were to do that here at the No Powder residence, it would have to be brought up for discussion. I believe 5 more horns and 5 more shooting bags, would be a bit over $100. And let's not forget, I'm (re)tired, and she is still working. Which means she could have 2 or 3 votes to my one.
