Gun Building and Repair / Jim Kibler Fowler

Jim's taking pre-orders on this new and absolutely exciting new offering.   I'm definitely down for one in extra fancy maple, in 20ga (he's also offering it in 16ga).

It comes pre-carved, too!!!  With fancy brass furniture!!

Gun Building and Repair / Woodsrunner Number Two
« Last post by RobD on Today at 06:06:08 AM »
I took receipt of another Woodsrunner late last year (I think - time has a way of playing tricks on me at my "advanced" age).  This one is cherry wood stocked and in a .45 bore.  The wood is as boring plain Jane as they come, all straight grained with no curl or stripe or bling of any kind.  Anyhoo, the kit went together lickety split, no issues as expected with a Kibler kit.

So now it's in the finishing stage, which is a good thing since this is the ONLY muzzleloader I have and I'd sure like to enter the TMA Postal Match this year.  I acquired some cherry wood samples from Katherine Kibler and did some tests with iron nitrate (Horrible!  turned the wood deep black!) and lye (Easy Off Oven Cleaner) that seemed to spoltch the wood a lot.  So to heck with it all and after sanding to 320 grit and raising and lowering the grain I went and used tried and true Tru-Oil as the finish, directly on the bare wood.  Cherry will darken "over time" and that might take years, which is okay by me, something for my Grandson to appreciate when I'm pushing up daisys, I hope.

Three more oil coats to go and she should be ready to test by next week.  I'll post images of the finished wood when she's done.

Stupid machine.

Can I shorten it to 66 or 68 inches at this point? It's tillered but not finished.

My hope is that this will remove some of the curve and perhaps raise the draw weight.

Thanks
Ironhand

Yes and no.  If you shorten the stave, it will absolutely need re-tillering and that might negate the reason why it's been shortened.

Tillering a stave is an art of sorts, and it usually takes going through a number of staves/boards to learn the craft ... even so, all wood is different and sometimes it is what it is.

Good on ya. Are you the same guy who told me about two days ago, that you can't shoot? Now you know why I said I didn't believe it for a minute.

Well I am back from the shoot and I am happy to report I took 1st place in rifle and 1st over all in aggregate.  :applaud
hit 14 of 17 targets . not bad for me.
My only complaint is that my friend Archie wasn't there,  he usually aces the course so I have some improvement to do but I am happy.
it was overcast most of the shoot with short periods of sun and rain. No glare whatsoever, I could bring ginger to shoulder and boom good sight picture. no heat waves, no reflection off the flat.  awesome.
I'm very pleased so far, the paint stayed on for the cleaning too, didn't rub off.  it's only a very light dusting of black.
So the heavy rains are starting again but I'll head to the range this w/e for some fun and report back.. hoping for full sun to see how that is.

I appreciate all the responses. same stuff all the guys in the club say, way too much boom.
My next session with the ol .62 I will definitely try a lesser charge.  not sure when that will be tho as I am loving my kibler at the moment.
I should take her to the range the next time out and give her another go.
