Knapping hammer?

Just wondering if I need one? Are they fairly easy to use? Just lloking for advise from some shooters in the know. Thanks!

Yep you will need something to touch up the flint . Be it your knife , a small hammer or a set of Knapping pliers
 
 i used to get those  cheep hammer sets at the dollar store.
 They are really brass coated  but I have not had one wear out.
 They are bigger then whats sold as Knapping hammers .
 They work better for me .

I've seen guys pressure flake a new edge with the tip of an antler tine. Also seen it done with a little pointed copper tool. I use either a wee brass hammer or the back of my knife. I do it at full cock with my left index finger supporting the underside of the flint's edge, then tapping it on the top side. Knocks ittybitty flakes off the lower side.

I use my turn screw.  I hold my finger under the edge of the flint.  putting the edge of the turn screw about 1/32 or less from the edge of the flint, then tap the turn screw.  It takes just a little practice, then you will be able to drive off really small shards of flint, bringing the flint to a razor sharp edge. I for one can't do any thing with a knapping hammer. This can also be done with a nail with a step filed in or a piece of brass used as a punch. bjh

The back of a knife blade can be dangerous in that the steel on the flint will spark. Loaded pan or not I wouldn't want a spark dancing around. I use a brass hammer sometimes but have made knapping hammers out of brass door hinge pins. Mount them in a piece of antler and they work just fine. Look good too.

I have three brass knapping hammers, but for some reason I always use the back of my knife, so I don't worry about the hammers any more.

At our BP shoots I have used my gerber multi tool many times for dull flints, removing locks, etc. etc. Stainless steel, not pc but a real handy do all tool. Gotta keep those boys shootin!

About that knife sparking? Never knap a flint that way in a loaded gun. I've seen folks do it, but that's when brass should be used, and you empty the pan first, and keep it pointed downrange.

I obviously agree fully with Kermit. There is first hand knowledge of a spark in an empty pan finding it's way into a touch hole and igniting the main charge.
