bunch a pistols
« on: November 29, 2012, 05:19:45 PM »
Here's a few pistols I've made lately for family members.  (1.) My .50, cochran lock, maple stock  (2.) Son's .40 cal. Rayl swamped bbl. bailes lock, walnut saw handle stock.  (3.) My interpretation of a "Hillyard" .54 under hammer, New England 1840's  (4.) .50 cal. pocket pistol, CVA lock, maple stock. All parts except bbl. locks & screws made in my shop................Tom

The little one has a belt holster & my youngest son carry's it while hunting deer & elk. A 4" piece of cut off rifle bbl.  50 cal. with 25gr. 3f & a 250 gr. lead hollow base bullet---it will put a critter to sleep right quick.  Fired into a chunk a wood it goes deeper than my short starter (6") & 4-5'................Tom

That must be a short barrel with the breech plug just behind the nipple?

Do you still get good accuracy with the sights set back?

Been my experience that the longer the sight picture the better the accuracy.

True, farther apart the sites are the less a slight variation makes in site alignment & shot placement.  Hence long bbl. rifles.  The plug screws into bbl.  1/2" & nip sits very close to plug face. It's because pistols have such a short radii that they are MUCH more difficult to shoot really well..........Tom
